What Jesus directs us to do and say is never mission impossible; it’s mission possible!
One Word –
Whenever you enter a town and they receive you . . . heal the sick in it and say to them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.” Luke 10:8-9
Daily Bible Reading: Exodus 7, 8; Luke 10, 11; John 10:22-42
Big Idea –
Talk about Mission Impossible! Light the fuse and cue the music because our mission, should we choose to accept it, is to heal the sick taking the message the good news into our community. If the Holy Spirit doesn’t help us this is mission impossible.
I can just imagine what those Jesus sent out were thinking, “You want us to do what? Heal the sick?” Announcing the coming of God’s kingdom is one thing, but Jesus wants us to do miracles?
Jesus sent out the 70 in pairs to the cities and villages through out Judea to put into practice what they had seen Him do. Their instructions were simple. Preach one message, “The Kingdom of God has come to you.” The proof was in the proverbial pudding; the sick were to be healed. That what Jesus told them to do.
This was not something any of them could do in their own ability or strength; they had to depend upon God – totally. Yet they went and did this everything Jesus told them to do. As a result they came back rejoicing that even demons were put in their place through their preaching. Jesus told them He saw Satan fall through their ministry in the towns and villages where Jesus had sent them. However, they were not to be glad about what they accomplished for God, but were to “rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (vs. 20).
Like Jesus followers so long ago, we too are being sent to our community to proclaim the good news. And it is to be an announcement made with power to heal the sick. This is not mission impossible; it is mission possible through the power of the Holy Spirit within us.
I need to let God’s Kingdom and His authority rule completely over my life to the point that I dare to take the risk of faith letting God prove Himself with signs and wonders through me.
Yes to Yield –
LORD Jesus, forgive me for playing it safe as a preacher. It’s a safe thing for me to stand on a Sunday morning and deliver a sermon to those who have come expecting to hear one. Holy Spirit empower me to preach the simple message that God’s Kingdom has come to intersect within the lives of people even in the marketplace. And give me faith to believe that you will confirm Your word with signs and wonders. Help me to believe that if I am going to see miracles happen the I must first be willing to say, “Be healed.” As I simply follow your instructions, then what humanly is mission impossible becomes not only mission possible, but mission accomplished!
